Why I Still Love the Clip Chart...

If you've been reading my blog for a while, you know my love for the Clip Chart. It honestly transformed my classroom environment. I went from focusing on the negative (with a system that primarily documented poor choices) to encouraging positive changes. I saw the biggest impact among those who have a habit of making poor choices. They went from being defeated and stuck in a rut, to understanding that change is possible and praiseworthy.

Now I although I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Clip Chart and the system I had going (you can read about it here and here), I know that some people have reservations. The one I hear most often, from other teachers and parents, is that it is too public. That having a record of mistakes on display (the lower levels of the Chart) and having students publicly acknowledge their mistakes (by walking over and moving their clip), is damaging to their confidence. I've even heard it said that it's a violation of their right to privacy.

While I respectfully disagree with both of those ideas, I get where they come from. As a child, I felt an ENORMOUS amount of pressure to achieve and be perfect... Much of it stemming from my own personality (think typical type-a first born and very shy). My perfectionist tendencies were encouraged and praised often. So in the times that I failed, or perceived that I had failed, I was crushed. I still remember the first time I had to change my behavior card in 3rd grade. My teacher used the stop light behavior system of 3 cards- green, yellow, and red. My card was always on green, until one day I got a little too enthusiastic in my conversation with a neighbor. My teacher, Ms. Lindeman, calmly and silently flipped my card to yellow, and there was an audible gasp from my classmates. I'm sure I turned a few shades of red and don't doubt that I wanted to hide. But I learned my lesson and moved on. The truth is that Ms. Lindeman is still by far my favorite teacher, and much of what I do as a teacher has been inspired by her.  So as hard as that moment was, it didn’t leave lasting damage.

I'm of the opinion that kids crave structure and consistency, and that they need accountability and consequences. Can these things be applied too harshly? Yes, which is why it is all about balance. For me that balance is in the Clip Chart. Yes, it is a record of mistakes, but it's also a record of victories. Yes, it requires kids to be publicly accountable for their mistakes, but that was often the only consequence necessary to steer them back to positive behavior. Now I'll be the first to admit it doesn't work for every kid, or every class. Nothing ever does.

So while I will always use a big, beautiful Clip Chart, I know that some teachers and parents prefer a more private version. So I’ve created a personal sized version of the Clip Chart, so that each student can keep one at their desk instead of using a large displayed version. Now their behavior can be just between you and them. The packet includes Clip Charts in black-line (students can color the levels), bright polka dot, or bright chevron prints. I’ve also included a behavior reflection sheets and certificates. You can purchase the personal sized Clip Chart here.

Just Treats, no Tricks!

So Halloween is just around the corner... And I still have no idea what the twinzies are going to be! Ack! It's making me crazy! Who knew it'd be so hard to choose a cute idea for twin boys? Pinterest is killing me, too many cute Halloween ideas but I feel like all the twin boy ideas are way over done. So I'm still on the lookout and I'm racking my brain trying to think outside the box. My BFF is awesome at unique Halloween costumes, I mean the girl was a Fandango puppet in college. Complete with the life-sized paper bag, that we made to fit her. IT WAS EPIC. I wish her Halloween awesomeness had rubbed off on me!

Last year we took the easy way out. The boys were just 5 months old, and we got home that day from a road trip. So easy-peasy costumes were a must. They'd received Ninja Turtle onesies complete with capes at one of my baby showers, which just happened to be the perfect size for Halloween. Homemade colored headbands (read: a strip of fabric with a knot) and we were good to go. And by go, I really mean stay home and take a million pictures while Daddy ate some candy. Our neighborhood is a bit dull on Halloween and we were just too tired to take them elsewhere. Traveling 10 hours in the car with twins is no joke.

My little ninjas!

But this year we plan to at least take them to our church's fall festival, we may even get brave and take them trick-or-treating in my friends neighborhood. We're on the fence though. I mean does anyone else feel weird trick-or-treating with 1-year-olds? Honestly, they can't even eat the candy, so basically I'd be using their cuteness to score myself some candy? Isn't that weird? Maybe not, I mean who turns down an opportunity for free candy... :)

But even though we're on the fence with Trick-or-Treating, I thought it was important to take a minute and talk about Trick-or-Treating safety. I'm definitely new to this whole experience from the mom-side of things. As a kids I never worried about my safety and even as a teacher I didn't give Trick-or-Treating safety much thought. But now as a mom, I see how important it is!! You really can't be too careful these days, but you still want to let them have fun right? It's all in finding a balance.

So here are some great Trick-or-Treating Safety tips that will definitely help you strike that balance between keeping kids safe and letting them have fun! And how cute is this little infographic? When I saw it I knew it'd be perfect for teachers to share with their classes, I definitely wish I had this when I was teaching! I'll be saving this for sure!

Big thanks to Norm Reeves of Acura of Mission Viejo, for creating and sharing this infographic with me. You can check out their website here

Cute, right? And full of great tips that I wouldn't necessarily have thought of myself. Hopefully you found the tips as helpful as I do!

And now I'm off to scope out Halloween costumes for the twins and I. Last year was one of the handful of years I didn't dress up. And I'm not making that mistake again. :)

So what will you be this Halloween? Any great ideas for my twinzies?

Currently {October 2015}

Only a little late this month...

I'm linking up with Farley for the October edition of Currently...

Listening/Loving: Fall weather is finally here!! There was totally wet stuff falling from the sky today. That NEVER happens here. Like seriously though, I live in the desert, we get about 3 inches a YEAR. Our periods of heavy rain yesterday, left us with .13" inches of precipitation. My hubby laughed out loud, when he saw that on the news. Such a teeny, tiny amount!

Thinking: I'd better start on the boys Halloween costumes. Except I have NO idea what they should be. Any one have any cute ideas for 1 year old twin boys??

Wanting: Umm...hello. It's not fall until you've indulged in a Pumpkin Spice Latte. I need one. Or maybe even a Pumpkin Chai Latte. Or both. Seriously though, If you love a PSL and you love chai, you MUST try a chai latte with a pump of pumpkin. Life changing. My bestie introduced me to the magic that is Pumpkin Chai. She knows what's up.

Needing: Vacuuming, it's so overrated. And if your one, it's also completely terrifying. Just the sight of the vacuum has poor Mr. Gummy Bear is tears. Crocodile tears. Complete with cowering in the corner. Breaks my heart. But hey, it's an excellent excuse for putting of vacuuming. Am I right?

Boo-tiful: One of my favorite things about teaching was watching students have light bulb moments. The expression of pure joy when something they were working hard on finally clicked was priceless. I LOVE watching it happen to my boys. They are loving exploring and trying new things. Current favorite is playing with a large rubber ball. They love experimenting with how it can move- rolling, pushing, bouncing, throwing... Their faces are priceless. It's BOO-tiful for sure!

So what are you up to lately?

Freebie {Editable Clip Chart Reflection Sheet}

Love the Clip Chart? Me too! I honestly found it invaluable in my classroom! Kids loved it, I loved it, parents loved it, and my admin loved it! Win! Win! Win!

One thing I struggled with in the beginning was how to make kids take ownership of their poor choices. This form was the ticket. When ever a child continued to make poor choices and ended the day on the lower part of the chart, they had to fill out one of these and have it signed by a parent or guardian. One form helped them to process their choicces and to notify parents. Love it!

The other thing I loved and the kids loved was the positive note home when they ended on Outstanding. :)

This is by far my most popular download on TpT! Get both pieces here free! The reflection sheet is even editable. :)

Currently {September}

Better late than never, right?
Where did August go? How is it mid-September already?

Anyhow I'm linking up with Farley of Oh' Boy 4th Grade
to tell you what I'm up to now:

Listening: The sweet sound of the ocean waves are lulling my babies to sleep. Gotta love some white noise and nap time! I have always found the sound of the ocean relaxing. :)

Loving: Can you believe Fall is just around the corner. Umm, yeah. I love me some Fall. Decorating. Cooler weather. Great food. Holidays. Pumpkin EVERYTHING. Sweaters. Seriously, what's not to love?

Thinking: And speaking of Fall, it's time to decorate. I LOVE my fall decorations, almost as much as I love my Christmas decorations. Yep, time to break them out!

Wanting: I love fall outfits. And I've got a few gift cards burning holes in my pockets. time to break them out!

Needing: It's time for some deep cleaning. And some laundry folding...that mile high pile on the couch is calling my name.

3 goals: 1. Finish my tpt unit, I have a huge Math unit I've been working on for a while, time to get 'er done! 2. My teacher friends and I promised we'd hang out once they had a few weeks under their belts. I can't wait to hear what's going on in their classes. I miss it! 3. My office/craft room/guest room/storage room is jam packed and in need of some loving. I've been meaning to give it some love for a while now. It's time to make it a priority!

How about you readers, what are you currently up to?

Currently {August}

I've missed these. Hopefully I can keep up this year!

Linking up with Farley of Oh' Boy 4th Grade!

Listening: Umm. Can I just say toddler laughs are the cutest, especially when they're cracking each other up. Oh my word! Times like these make all the hard work of having and raising twins WORTH it!! Excuse me while I join in...

Loving: I'm definitely missing the classroom again this year, but by reading all the back to school posts I can live vicariously through my favorite bloggers. There are some seriously good ideas that I'm pinning away for when I return to the classroom.

Thinking: Like I said, I'm seriously missing the classroom. But I also LOVE staying home with my boys. This teacher-mama is torn, guys! But babies are only babies for so long, so I'm gonna soak up every minute while I can. The classroom will have to wait a bit longer...

Wanting: A genuine, authentic vacation. Maybe the beach, or even Disneyland! Haha totally opposite ends of the relaxation spectrum, but that's how I roll. Love me some Disney! But it's been WAY TO LONG since we took a legit vacation.

Needing: Pretty sure my to do list is a mile long, guys. Like for real. I don't even know where to start. Now that we get good long naps I've got the time. But man has that list piled up!

B2S RAK: So even though I'm taking the year off for the second year in a row, I'm going back for a visit during teacher prep week. I'm totally bringing them some goodies. And I'm certain my little sidekicks will brighten they're day as well. :)

So how about you, what are you up to lately?

The BIG TPT B2S Sale: What I'm loving this year!

KJ

What teacher doesn't love a good sale? I mean we already spend a ton on our classrooms, so a sale means we can get more for our money! That's win in my book! Monday and Tuesday are the TPT (teacherspayteachers) Back to School Sale. You can get some of the best prices all year. I had a really hard time narrowing down my favorites. I want #allthethings. My wish list is definitely jam packed. :) But here are my top favorites this year:

1. Math Centers from Elementary Shenanigans

Can i just say that Hope King is a genius. I truly had a love/hate relationship with Math Centers. Loved the ability to do small group instruction, HATED all the prep work and lost pieces. Not to mention how complicated it was to differentiate and not had a bunch of bored kiddos! The other day I had the opportunity to watch Hope's Periscope about her centers. OMG, guys! Seriously, she has solved the Center craziness. She has truly simplified the process with her A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. centers. No joke these are life changing!! One set of centers can get you through the ENTIRE year! Or if you're feeling fancy you can chose to use her monthly themed centers. All you need is laminated file folders,student folders, velcro, her response sheets, number cards (a deck or the ones included in the packet), and readily available manipulatives. No tiny pieces to cut, laminate and use. No leveled activities to find and use. One center= #allthelevels. Brilliant!

You can check out her centers on TPT here, and definitely check out her blog here for the videos on how she sets it all up.

Side-note: If I could afford it I would quite literally buy everything Hope makes, her stuff is that good. I really, really had a hard time narrowing it down to just one.

2. Step into Second Grade's Key Word Kiddos

Umm seriously how cute are these?And bonus they are super helpful. A lot of my kids always had trouble deciphering word problems, struggling to choose the right operation. So in the past I had an anchor chart with this info posted on my wall. But how much more fun are these! Love them! I have used Amy's products in my room for years, I love her!

You can check them out on TPT here, and definitely check out her blog here for the details on how she sets it all up.

3.  A Teacher's Plan Book by The Teacher Wife

Keeping everything organized is always a challenge. While I love the look of teacher planners, especially the Erin Condren ones {drool}, they never really worked for me. And the price. Ouch. Something totally customizable works much better for me. So I've stuck with binders the past few years. I've gone through a few different setups, but I absolutely love this binder insert set by Lindsey (The Teacher Wife). Exactly what I need, easy to print and a cute simple design. LOVE IT!

You can check it out on TPT here, and definitely check out her blog here for more cuteness.

4. One Extra Degree's Picture This Writing Prompts

I'm always looking for early finisher activities that are meaningful. These picture writing prompts fit the bill. They are adorable and look like so much fun. The kiddos are going to love writing stories about what is happening in these pictures!

You can check it out on TPT here, and definitely check out her blog here for even more writing ideas.

5. Super in Second! by Babbling Abby

The first week of school can be super crazy, all the supplies to unpack, all the kids to meet, all the beginning of the year assessments, all the... well I'm sure you know ALL ABOUT IT. Making the first week memorable and enjoyable, sets the tone for the rest of the year. This packet is perfect for starting the year off right. It is jam packed with fun activities that will help create community and an atmosphere of fun. I love everything Abby makes! It was super hard to choose just one!

You can check it out on TPT here, and definitely check out her blog here for all the cuteness that is Abby's life.

So there you have it my top picks for the TPT B2S sale... What's in your cart?
